More Thoughts on Where Blogging Can Take You

01.29.2015 by Maggie McGary // Leave a Comment

Last week, I started a post that I thought was going to be about how to use Windows on a Chromebook (notice the title on the post) but turned out to be just sort of a ramble about blogging and blog burnout and a post I figured nobody would read. Then friend Deirdre Reid left a comment that I have to say really warmed my heart. The thought that my rants and ramblings would inspire anyone–let alone someone who I admire not only as a great writer but as a person–surprised me and thawed my blog burned-out soul more than a little.

It also made me think about all the blogs I read that have inspired me, and that I’ve been sad to see either fold or wane as the person either got burned out or just caught up in life. Blogs like Sanity Fair, all gorgeous photos and a tiny apartment I covet. Or The Bloggess, whose awesomeness needs no explanation–and which is still going strong, even though I haven’t kept up with it in a while. Or the long-abandoned for book fame, Stuff White People Like. Or Young House Love, which I never actually read when it was going strong but am sort of obsessed with its demise after it overtook the personal lives of the husband and wife team who wrote it and they disappeared.

Anyway, I guess my point is that it’s nice to know that, in this day and age of pageviews and content marketing and just Internet overload that it’s still possible to have little moments like connecting with people like Deirdre or having a window into Sanity Fair’s perfect tiny apartment. And that maybe moments like that are what makes it worth pushing through the burnout.
